The World is Flat

The most significant flatteners to me were that of Netscape, outsourcing, and open sourcing. First of all, Netscape was the first to make an internet browser which allowed people to access the internet at a much more productive rate. Also they were known to bring applications in synchronization, allowing for something like E-banking to not matter on what software or programs they use in comparison to yours which makes things so much easier. It completely flattened the field and made a huge difference in how interconnectivity was working. Another huge flattener was the dot com boom that made so much more information and programming allowed for everyone to use and to see. “While you were sleeping, a revolution happened.” Connectivity was just skyrocketing during this time. Netscape was such an important aspect of the start of this movement.

Now, after Netscape has done its part, outsourcing has made its way into the business world. With this, you can have your accounting department in India just as easy as it would be having it down the hall. This is simply because of the accidental 1 trillion dollar superfluous purchase of fiber optics and fiber optic cable allowing for communication of voice and data to transfer overseas virtually being free. This is how the power has shifted tremendously. This is how individuals and small groups will be able to take command.

Lastly, one of the most volatile flatteners of this movement is none other than open sourcing. This is a completely way to connect with other individuals, allowing you to be much more productive and it makes it like your next to one another. Have you ever heard of Firefox? It was made by a nineteen yr old from the Stanford and a 24 year old from Australia. This shows the potential of what is to come from “globalization”.

important flattener

Tom Friedman made some very nice points about the “flatteners” of the world. He made many points about things like the fall of the Berlin wall, the rise of Netscape, different companies collaborating and how the workflow helped people bring their work together and be able to be viewed by everyone. But out of those flatteners, I think that the most important one is when Netscape came into being.

Netscape is a significantly important flattener because it help fully globalize the internet and made it more open to the public. Another thing that it helped with was globalizing the economy between countries. It did that by allowing people to view go to different web pages and view all the material that they had by using a web browser. That was one reason that Netscape was helping in flattening the world that Friedman had said about Netscape. A second reason that Netscape was helping in the flattening of the world was the use of commercialized open transmission protocol. What the protocol did was make it so no major company had or said they had any control of the internet. With the protocol in place, people of different internet providers could then go to other providers to check them out. The third and most important point that Mr. Friedman made about Netscape was create the dot com bubble. What happened during the dot com bubble was that miles and miles of fiber optic cables were laid out over land and sea to connect the many countries that were using the internet. It was a trillion dollar plan that took quite some time to accomplish. Friedman had said that the connection that Netscape had set up was like a railroad that was free. Just like a railroad took people too different cities and towns, the internet took people to different places to do research and the like and it was all for free.

I found that specific flattener to be really informative and it helped me understand how the world got connected because of a small company from California.

Homework 2

In Tom Freidman’s video “The World Is Flat” he talks about a very unique way of looking at the world. He describes it as ‘Globalization’ and the ten days that the company’s technologies events that came together to so call create this window of opportunity. The first date was 11/9 (November 9, 1989) coincidently the Berlin Wall came down on this day. He called this one of the ten flatteners because it made people look at the world as a single flat plain. In the video Freidman describes ‘Globalization’ at one point as policies, there was a western eastern southern and northern policy. It wasn’t until November 9th 1989 that the wall that was separating the four policies came down and theoretically windows went up, turning the policies into Globalization. This was one of Tom Freidman’s ten theories. He is a very smart man and dedicated to figure out if the world is actually if fact flat. His theories on the matter are very interesting and actually make a lot of sense.

Tom Friedman Response...

The speech given by Tom Friedman in regards to the “ten flatteners” of the world really opened my eyes and had me think about technology from the past and in present day. He talked about how far our advancements have come, allowing people to virtually connect with just about anyone around the world. The more that he broke down his ten theories the more they began to make sense. The world truly can be perceived as flat because with the way technology has advanced and allowing people to connect almost instantly. Throughout Tom’s speech he gives us an insight to all ten flatteners that have unconventionally advanced our world to what it has become today.
August 9th, 1995 in Mountain View California when a little startup company called Netscape went public with a new invention they had created. They were one of the most important “flatteners” for three reasons. One of which was they truly gave us the internet that we have today,  they truly brought the internet “alive” allowing us to illustrate on computer screens all the information locked inside websites. Netscape made it so that not website could solely dominate the internet. They also had the over investment of fiber optic cable in five years, that over investment over sea and over land brought down the cost of transmitting lines, practically making it free. Every company knew they need to lay fibrotic cable because the demand for it was going to “infinite” This brought people to people connectivity to a whole other level.
The second flattener that I chose was flattener number six, according to Friedman On December 11, 2001, China formally joined the World Trade Organization, which meant Beijing agreed to follow the same global rules governing exports, imports, and foreign investments that most countries were following. Since China joined the World Trade Organization, both china and the rest of the world are working at a considerably greater pace.

Homework # 2

As I watched Tom Friedman’s speech at Yale, It made me begin to think. Many of these flatteners have been developed in my lifetime. I have been able to see drastic changes in the technology world. The two flatteners I felt were significant were Netscape and Wikipedia.  Netscape was developed in the 90’s and released on 8/9/95. A Small Company in Mountain View, CA had developed Netscape. This company has changed the world forever. Any thing you can imagine on the Internet has been made possible from Netscape. This Internet browser has made it possible for people all over the world to illustrate anything they want. Companies are now able to sell over the Internet, you are able to research anything you want via Internet and find it instantaneously. Netscape has made it possible for people to connect all over the world and communicate effectively and much cheaper. This changed the world of dot COM.
Wikipedia also is another significant flattener of the world. With out Internet Wikipedia and other search sites would have never been possible. Tom Friedman mentioned in his speech that he was able to replace Encarta with Wikipedia. If it wasn’t for these great resource sites we may be working with software that isn’t as efficient and timely as the web. Wikipedia had made it possible to find exactly what your are searching and give you information brought to you by people all over the world who have shared their knowledge and resources on a particular point and bring it to you electronically and instantaneously.
Tom Friedman brought some great Flatteners to the table but I feel Netscape and Wikipedia are significant flattners. Without Web browsers or search engines I don’t know where would we be. Our whole world revolves around social media and Internet browsing. Sending thing electronically and communicating faster and further that we could ever imagine. Now we connect with people all over the world with a click of a button. It continues to amaze me. How much we have accomplished as a society and I am excited to see where we are headed next.

Homework 2
What was your most significant flattener(s) from Tom Freidman lecture regarding his book, The World is Flat?

The most significant flattener and Tom Friedman lecture was the invention of Netscape although there were other flattener is that were important this one set the bar for all the others. Netscape invented the Internet August 9, 1989. Due to Netscape inventing the Internet the .com bubble happens, that was when the United States investors started to lay fiber-optic cables across India and other parts of the world. When escape really did was bring people closer together. Due to Netscape inventing the Internet it brought all the other flatter together. For example in the early 1990s when apps could connect with other apps and increased workflow and create a platform for the other flatters

I believe Tom Friedman's flatters are correct and are quite interesting. even though I believe there are more flattener's then he points out. For example the invention of little things. that happened way before our time like the invention of electricity ,wheel, and farming.

The Most Critical World Flattener

Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat describes ten events that greatly shifted the dynamic of life on earth. The World is Flat introduces a paradigm shift — a world which had previously sheltered civilizations from the benefits and dangers of other far away countries has become increasingly open in nature. Countries once distanced by great oceans, valleys, and mountains, are now only a step away.

While the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th, 1989, offshoring, supply chaining, and insourcing are all certainly important factors to consider in how the world has become truly global I believe computers have impacted globalization far more than any other event.

The release of Netscape to the public on August 9th, 1995 had by far the greatest impact on globalization. Computers were becoming increasingly widespread across the world. The World Wide Web has influenced the world far more than any other factor ever has — and possibly more than any other factor ever will. Netscape allowed for laymen to access the World Wide Web en masse. This shaped the world as it is today. People began to share their ideas and stores began to sell their products. Communication was now an open platform and web pages could be created by anyone with the knowledge to do so. This provided a huge contribution to the world as we know it as it was previously very difficult to publish personal thoughts and spread ideas. It was now easy to meet people from around the world to communicate and collaborate.

While this was all very important there was one more key factor: the search engine. Information was difficult to find on the web. Websites that contain the content users are actually looking for were impossible to find until their was a way to organize such information. As such, Netscape would have had limited impact if search engines were never invented. Imagine the world wide web (I am being careful here not to use the word internet as it pertains to much more than the web) where people from around the world post ideas that only their close friends will ever see. Well known companies are the only web pages that can be found with relevancy. Everything else is clutter.

Without Netscape and search engines that could organize such a massive amount of information, the world would be unable to connect as it has and it would be much "rounder" than it is today.

Oh, and For Your Information, the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web can be found here: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2002/Web_vs_Internet.asp

And the link found above was found by using a search engine:

At first, I had no idea what Tom Friedman was talking about when he said the world is flat, but after his brief explanation it make a lot of sense to me.  Friedman got into one of his chapter which was called the “Ten days that flattened the world”. And he went through each of them an explained how each one helped to make an individual person more connected with nearly everything and everyone in the world.  His second explanation was of the day that Netscape released publicly. Netscape was the first internet browser to be released to the public and it forever changed the way the average person uses the internet. As we learned earlier in class, an internet browser is an application in which information can be retrieved and transferred over the World Wide Web.  This allowed people to be more interconnected to each other like they were never able to before; the average person could now surf the internet in virtually the easiest way possible.  This suddenly took down the barrier of distance, and basically made the world become next door neighbors as Tom Friedman said.  Netscape abilities allowed for the creation of all the .com websites.  For me I feel like this is one of if not the most important flattener because internet browsing is one of the most basic important functions of the modern computer. Netscape is the reason why face book and other extremely popular social websites are able to be so successful. People are now instantly connected to each other regardless of distance. And for me, it allows me to watch YouTube videos, because people can so easily transfer  and access media (such as videos) via websites.

world flat mikemerjuste

There are many things that I can say about the ten flatteners that Tom Friedman explained in the extremely popular YouTube video the world is flat. Tom explained ten flatteners in his perspective that caused the business working field to narrow down in size from big to ultimately small. In my opinion I feel that Tom did a very good job in creating these flatteners to explain to average day worker what is going on and what our society will undergo. Out of all of toms flatteners there are two main flatteners that I feel that are outrageously more important for the average united states worker should really pay close attention too. The first most important flattener I feel that people should understand is insourcing. The reason why I say this is because lots of people do not realize how important insourcing is to the big companies that rely on companies such as UPS that are based on in sourcing to make a profit. The fact that UPS is working for over a million companies in the united states show that insourcing is a big impact on how businesses can flatten the working field. The second flattener that Tom spoke of that I feel made a huge difference in the working field is the second one ,how Netscape became to the world. The reason why I say this is because netscape change the world is because ever business has to have internet some way shape or form. This makes things easier for every body who knows how to access and function the Internet. Billions of people all around the world uses the Internet. Because of netscape going public to the world people can know work from there homes and triple the work ethic of a average humane being. What and were would our lives be without the Internet? The biggest issue of the Internet I feel is that we all rely on it too much. the ethernet is the biggest thing to happen to man in the past 50 years. this is huge to all of man because of what it has done to buisnesses in all around the world. netscape is the pioneers to the future and beyond.

Home work # 1

Hello, my name is Meaghan Neilly. I am 21 years old and a junior at Nichols. Prior to Nichols I went to a community college where I explored an early education major and took some marketing courses. I was torn between the two because I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and work with children but I am also creative and enjoy the different aspects that go into the world of marketing. I decided to transfer to Nichols and major in marketing. I’ve have adapted well and have found Nichols has a lot to offer me. I hope to someday work for an advertising agency or even own my own business. I currently live at home with my Mom, Dad and two brothers, Devin who is 16 and a sophomore at Saint Johns High School and Aidan who is 12 and in 6th grade at Charlton Middle School. I am very familiar with the area because I went to high school right down the street and live in the town next town over Charlton. In my free time I enjoy photography, snowboarding and traveling. So far I have had the opportunity to travel to Europe and Australia both amazing places but very different. I hope I am fortunate enough to travel to other places in the future. When I first signed up for this course I was a little unsure what to expect. After reading the article it helped me better understand exactly what this course is about. In this fast changing world of technology it is helpful to keep up to date on what’s going on. Its seems to be if you are tech savvy, you can go far. I hope to learn more about software programs, and the best way to manage the company through software and networks.

The World is Flat - Tom Friedman

Prior to listening to Tom Friedman's presentation of The World is Flat, I was a little bit confused on what he was actually referring to.  Then after listening to his theories about technology and modern-day communication, I started to understand Friedman's figurative stand point on how he views the world as "flat".

Friedman breaks down his theory of the world being flat into ten different reasons and/ or events that he calls "flatteners".  In my opinion, the most significant flattener that made the most impact on our technological society was the development of Netscape.  On August 9, 1995, Netscape went public and single-handedly paved the way for people to be able to surf the web and communicate with each other all over the world.  Netscape was not the invention of the internet, but rather the internet browser.  This was a breakthrough in the sense of giving people the ability to search the internet and retrieve information from webpages.  Netscape also freed up the internet and made it impossible for any major company or corporation could dominate it, which allowed for more interconnection between people.  The introduction of Netscape triggered the "dot com" boom, which in turn triggered (what Friedman refers to as) the accidental over-investment in fiberoptic cable.  This alone cut down the cost of transmitting data across the world.  The demand of fiberoptic cable between domain names was so high that it was made available for virtually no cost.  This made it possible for more people to connect with others, at such a low cost, whenever they wanted to, and wherever they wanted to.

Netscape was by far the most significant flattener that was discussed in Friedman's presentation.  It created a path for people to communicate with each other over the internet at anytime they want to, no matter where they are around the world.  It also gave people the freedom of surfing the web for music, websites, and/ or any information they wish to view whenever they want to.  Everyone uses the internet everyday.  We have such easy access to it now with smartphones, ipods, and ipads.  Businesses and schools build websites to be able to communicate and sell themselves to the world.  The internet is what runs our modern-day society.  Netscape was a huge breakthrough in the technological world, and it essentially "flattened" the world more and faster than any other during this time.

Homework 2

After listening to Tom Friedman’s lecture on how the world is becoming flat, which could be heard if you followed this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53vLQnuV9FY,I learned the most significant flatteners were outsourcing and insourcing.  I think insourcing and outsourcing are key factors in leveling the playing field.  One key thing about how the playing field is “flat” is how different countries can now communicate with each other.  Outsourcing allows companies to locate their stores in other countries, which allows them to operate much cheaper.  This strategy maximizes their profit because having companies in cheaper places is much more cost effective than having them here in the U.S.  Although I do not agree with outsourcing that much I do believe it was and still is a huge factor that “flattened” the world.  I don’t think insourcing is as bad as outsourcing because it will bring in jobs.  Insourcing is used also used to be more cost effective.  It cuts down on taxes and transportation.  Both of these factors combined definitely leveled the playing field in the world which caused it to become flat.  Since outsourcing and insourcing involve moving jobs this allows different countries to compete equally.  For example if a business in the United States moves overseas then what we had in the U.S. will also be overseas now.  This makes everything balanced.  What Tom Friedman means when he says “flattened world” is a balanced and equal world where everyone can compete equally.  I think the most important part here is technology.  Exposing the same technology across the world gives everyone the same opportunities.  This could be good or bad.  I think this could cause some countries to become very weak because even though most of the world is balanced there are still some countries below the poverty level.  I think these countries that have limited technology will only get weaker as others will grow and become more balanced.  I think the concept of the world flattening is interesting because I never thought of that. I think some changes need to be made for the whole world to be flat because right now I don’t think everyone has the same opportunities.

Important Flattener

The most significant flattener from Tom Friedman was on August 9, 1995 when a company by the name of Netscape from California went public. This event flattened the world in many ways, creating a much more globalized economy. The first way in which it did this was through bringing the internet to life. Netscape had provided us with an internet browser that allowed us to pull up web pages and all their content easily and efficiently. The second way in which Netscape flattened the world was through the creation of a commercialized open transmission protocol. This open communication protocol made it so that no one company could dominate the internet. This set of open communication protocols again leveled out the walls that had been between users of different internet providers. The third and according to Tom Friedman, most important thing that Netscape did was to start the dot com boom. This in turn triggered what he refers to as the dot com bubble. This dot com bubble triggered the accidental investment in laying fiber optic cable. This one trillion dollar investment laid cables that stretched over both land and see, connecting the world. This over investment in the fiber optic cable created the accidental effect that whole countries were neighbors of countries that could be thousands of miles away. This abundance in fiber optic cable drastically drove down the cost of transmitting voice, words, and data that the cost for such services became basically free. Once everyone had realized the high demand for this fiber optic cable, everyone from fly by nighters to large corporations began to lay cable. This over abundance caused the price for telecommunications to drop drastically worldwide. Friedman compares this to when the United States made the railroads and we as a nation got to ride for free, the difference being that in the global laying of fiber optic cable India and China got to ride for free.
This is insightful and undoubtedly the greatest of the flatteners because it allowed the world to connect as a whole and without this the world today would not have the global economy it does because there would still be barriers in the way
.  Netscape icon

I personally thought that Tom Friedman’s speech was very interesting. When listening to him explain how the world was flat I thought that perhaps he was crazy. Then he explained how advanced our technology is today making us able to connect with anyone around the world. It then made sense to me that the world is flat because we are able to do things across the country in a matter of seconds. Tom then explained the flatteners that caused our world to be flat. He explained ten different ones, and I choose two that I thought were most important.

The first flattener that I thought was extremely important was the 8/9/95 which was when Netscape went public. Now I don’t really know too much about it except that it was the first browser to be public to all people with the internet. I would agree however that this would be the foundation of what really made our world flat. This browser gave us the ability to search for all the information that was out there. Also this allowed so many others to create things with the internet and make so many technological advances that we have today. Also when it was released they made sure that no companies would be able to dominate it so that it was available for everyone. Also another great outcome of the release was that it triggered that .com boom. This allowed for so many new and exciting technological advances that we are a part of today.

The second flattener that I thought was also very valuable was the work flow error. I would also say that this flattener coincides with the previous flattener I mentioned with Netscape. In this flattener Tom describes how all companies were currently on the internet but were unable to communicate with other departments. For example he mentioned that Yale’s admissions department was unable to connect with applications from Yale’s accounting department. In this flattener people were now able to share information with other people’s applications. This allowed for companies to see for example a spreadsheet from the accounting department even if you worked in the admissions department.

Flattener

After listening to Thomas Friedman's speech entitled the World is Flat, I personally believe that the most important flattener he spoke about was the introduction of Netscape. When the Internet was first introduced no one really thought much about it. Today the internet is one of the most useful tools there is in the business world. The internet allows people to communicate with each other across the world, whether it is through email or a web cam. Business people can do business without even being in the same room as one another thanks to the internet. The internet did not just affect the business world, it affected the entire world. People can interact with one another, you can meet new people online, you can do all of your shopping on the internet without even leaving your house, some people work at home on their computers and never have to step foot into an office. The introduction of the internet has allowed for so many more advances to modern day tasks. Listening to Friedman talk about how the business world is flattening out really is true and is really interesting to hear about. The internet alone has “flattened” the playing field almost all by itself. Advantages of the internet allow for much quicker business transactions and allow companies to stay up to date with what their competitors have been doing. When a company knows what their competitors have been completing, they can turn around and respond with a new or more proficient product. With all of this happening technology has been increasing by unremarkable amounts over the past decade. Moving up through school to college I have slowly seen the evolution of the internet in the education system. The internet provides me with information for projects and home work that I would not have known, but with the help of the internet it is easily accessible and can be found almost instantly. Here at Nichols we use Moodle in many of our classes to submit our work and check to see what is due. Without the internet we would not be able to access sites like these. The introduction of Netscape is one of the most important factors in the world becoming flat today.

Important Flattener

In my opinion the most important flattener that Friedman came up with was "Netscape goes public on August 9, 1995". With that said we need to look at what has become of businesses, everyday life, learning and much more from the release of the Internet. Personally as far as school work goes it is very convenient to just be able to punch in what you are searching for and boom up comes what you were looking for. My parents always remind me how lucky our generation is to have the Internet because they would have to look everything up in books, and if the book was checked out the library that you needed, you were up a creek without a paddle. One of Friedman's other flatteners talked about how the markets of the world globalized. If we look at even something like that the use of the Internet makes it easy for companies in different countries to communicate on a day to day basis. Things such as Skype that are not now even allow globalized companies to have meetings online visually even if you are in a different country. These advances all came from the original idea of the Internet. Lastly everyday life is impacted by the World Wide Web by many things. First off you can communicate with family or friends on a daily basis by just sending out an email, not everyone has time to talk on the phone all day but an email is a friendly way to say hi whenever you have a free second. Another way that the Internet impacts daily life is by something that is big right now, Social Networking. Social Networking is a major communication tool now and is only getting bigger; companies are even starting to use these methods to contact people that they believe might be a good employer. Currently every junior that is in the PDS class has to register for a Social Networking job site called "LinkedIn", this is a prime example about how these networking mechanisms on the Internet are even becoming versatile in ways many people believed that they would not.

Thomas Friedman is a three time Pulitzer Prize winner and a columnist for the New York Times. He writes two weekly columns which usually consist of topics such as globalization and environmental issues. He wrote a book called The World is Flat. Thus meaning, whatever can be done will be done, there’s only one question for you, will it be done by you or for you.

The World is Flat talks about the in-sourcing and outsourcing of the world as a flattener. Tom figured out that the world is flat because of what he calls flatteners.  He uses an example in his book for in-sourcing as what the company UPS does. They don’t just deliver packages; they make your company a whole different participle. They get right up to the top notch of management and they take over your entire logistics operations. It becomes a huge flattener for us because it requires a lot of different standards. So in an example of what is done is say at Nike when you are online ordering what you want for sneakers there isn’t a Nike rep on the other side taking your order, it is a UPS person. They are controlling the in-sourcing of companies worldwide, which is flattening the world in Toms’ eyes.  When looking at outsourcing, it has become a major trend over the past couple of decades worldwide. Outsourcing is the practice of sending certain jobs or certain functions of a job to an outside source or company whereas instead you could be doing them in-house or doing yourself.  Many companies worldwide are outsourcing because it makes the process easier for their own individual company.  If companies around the world did not outsource then some of these industries may not have the opportunity to be part of the society in a way that they are now.  When these companies that just make one product for another company is told to stop because that company is now going to do it themselves, they will all lose out on everything they have.

I believe that Outsourcing and in-sourcing is the biggest flattener that Thomas Friedman talks about in his book because if you don’t use these tools then you are going to be the one that is taken advantage of.  Like I stated before when he means the world is flat he really means that “whatever can be done, will be done. There’s only one question will it be done by you or for you”

In my opinion the most significant flattener that Tom Friedman talks about is the insourcing and outsourcing. This is very important to the change of the world because it is the whole reason other companies in other countries around the world are becoming stronger than the ones in the United States. In sourcing and outsourcing all revolves around giving other what you or your company should do. Companies and individual ultimately lose a lot from these sourcing ideas. These allow other countries and companies to level the industries around the world. The world is a playing field so we must do all we can to keep up with the other countries, as they are providing work that cost much less then people require in the United States. Countries across the world can do things for Americans. Globalization has advanced China, Japan and India creating less individualism between the statuses of each country. JetBlue has outsourced many of the reservations for flights thus causing companies to advance completely and leveling the business world. A man and woman can live at home and get people in India or China to design baby food labels, business designs, taxes, new home designs, and websites for cheaper then someone in the United States can. How can the United States and small countries keep up with outsourcing and insourcing? People lose jobs and many people cannot keep up with the amount of work people do from over seas and around the country. Outsourcing has led to people being able to do what Americans should do. In sourcing has led to the downfall of “do it yourself” instead people are not doing their own work. By allowing others to do the work for you, you are learning less; we spend more for out of country uses and less money flows through the American industries. Although this is bad for the American economy it allows businesses all over to flourish and maybe help advance a country financially. As times change the world focuses on a Web-Based Platform for the new generations to continue and develop over time.

Hello there, my name is Shayne McNally and I am a 19 year old sophomore here at Nichols College.  Born and raised in Auburn, MA, I live with my mom, Christine, my dad, Dale, and my dog, Mac. I also have two older sisters named Shannon and Danielle.  As of right now, I am currently a Sport Management major but I am considering changing to General Business.  I am also a part of the Nichols College Baseball team, and am looking forward to going to Fort Myers for this spring break and having an awesome time with my teammates.  Baseball is a huge part of my life.  I won a State Championship during my junior year in high school, which I consider to be one of my biggest achievements in my life.  Aside from playing sports, one of my favorite hobbies is being a musician.  I have been playing guitar for five years, and drums for eight years.  It's something that I take a lot of pride in and enjoy doing in my spare time.

I don't really know much about MIS, but I anticipate myself learning a lot during the course of this semester.

I found the article to be extremely informative, considering I do not know a lot about the subject.  What I found most interesting is the employment rate for those working within the field.  There is a high demand for IT workers because of the rapid technological growth in our world today.  Almost all major businesses and corporations have networks that are growing in size and sophistication, which creates job opportunities for workers with computer-related apptitudes.

I’ve played soccer throughout my whole life, including all four years of high school and my freshman year of college, in which we won the championship. I work for Outback Steakhouse, I was hired as a busser/host, and have worked my way up to a server, bartender, and a manager. I’ve worked for Outback since March 2010. Some prior work experience that I have is that I worked for Life Care Center Of Auburn as a diet aide, and I also worked for Shaw’s Supermarket in the grocery department. I’m a sophomore and a General Business Major, with concentrations in Human Recourse Management, Business Communications, and Management; with a minor in Criminal Justice at Nichols College. I would like to eventually establish and manage my own company once I graduate from Nichols in 2014. My hobbies consist of playing soccer, hanging out with friends, working, and playing sports. My friends and family are the two most important things in my life, and of course my dog Brady.

I’m looking forward to this course in particular because I myself am not too familiar with information systems. Being a student at a school that shapes you into being a professional I find that it is crucial to be familiar with management information systems because technology in today’s age is growing at an extreme pace.  After reading this article it really gave me an insight on just some of the details involved with Management Information Systems, it stated that in The article stated that in 2008 25% of all Computer and Information System Managers worked over 50 hours a week. This means that this field is at high demand and can result in being very stressful.

intro

What's up yall. My name is jake wheelwright and I am a sophmore here at Nichols, I represent Olson 210. I am from Cohasset mass, its a small town on the water about 45 minutes south of Boston. I like to spend my spare time outdoors either riding my dirtbike or some other outdoor activities. I pretty much anjoy anything that goes fast or has a motor. Summer is my favorite time of the year because my friends and I take out our boat that we got very cheep and grill just offshore and kick back listening to tunes and what not. Cohasset is a very small town and i graduated with about 85 kids in my senior class I played sports all through high school, mainly Football and lacrosse, and I was fortunate to be captain of my football team and win a state championship in lacrosse for high school.

I am really not very good at computers at all, I rarely spend time on one unless im doing school work or looking up youtube videos. I am also one of a few kids that I know that dont have a facebook so I'm out of the social networking loop. I hope to get a better idea of how to work with computers seeing that the knowledge is so valuable and necessary in many of todays well paying workplaces. Many things about computer and information system managers, but what stuck out and suprised me the most was how stessful of a job it can become at times. The article stated that in 2008 25% of all Computer and Information System Managers worked over 50 hours a week, and very undesireable week of work in my book.

Introduction

Hey my name is John Amato. I graduated from Oxford High School and am a sophomore here at Nichols and am a Sport Management major.  I commute from Oxford and have lived there my entire life.  I am nineteen years old and love to play sports and hang out with my friends.  My favorite sport would have to be basketball and my favorite team is the Celtics.  I have been going to two or three games a year since I was a kid.  I work at VIA, which is an Italian restaurant on Shrewsbury Street.  I have been there about a year and a half now.  I recently started bartending after working a year as a bar-back.  I also started there by bussing for a few months.  I like to go to the movies and listen to music in my free time.  I hope to do something with basketball with my Sport Management Major and enjoy watching pretty much any NBA game.
From this course I hope I can learn about management systems and how they work.  I would definitely have to say I am behind with blogging and things like that so I hope this course will help me learn more about things like this because technology plays a big role in today’s society and it is only going to grow and become more popular.  It is important to keep up with the times nowadays and this class will really help me in the future.  I don’t plan on doing much with computers for a career but I think this class will help me learn the basics that I will need.  Digital Applications was also a great course to help me get a good knowledge on computer skills.
From the article I learned that jobs are increasing because of technology.  I also learned how much pressure managers could have, how they have to deal with problems, and the long hours that they sometimes have to work.

Who i am.

who am i?

My name is Kimberly Alexa Lawlor, I am the daughter of Karen and Thomas Lawlor. I was born in Boston, MA and have grown up in a town called Mansfield since I was born. I  live with my mother, my 26 year old brother Michael, 24 year old sister Nicole, and 17 year old sister Kelly. I also have a father and step mother that live about 5 minutes away in Foxboro. Growing up I attended public school of Mansfield where I was a 2 season athlete playing soccer, basketball, and running spring track. I was born on June 14th, 1991, which makes me 20 years of age. Currently I have 2 jobs, one of them is being the Nichols College woman’s basketball manager which I just started this year. I absolutely love the job and all the girls, which makes it easy. My duties are to attend every practice and game (which is time consuming) I set up and clean up for practice, and for game days I keep the official book of the game that includes the score, fouls, time outs, jump balls, each players point, and stats. My other job is working in a high end restaurant in Mansfield called Fresh Catch Seafood. It is a delicious seafood restaurant that also serves sushi as well. I am the Hostess in the restaurant so I greet each customer, sit them, and answer the phone to make reservations I pretty much do whatever I can to make them happy. I also run food when its busy which is pretty self explanatory, I bring the food out to the tables and serve them there meal. And another duty I have within the restaurant is taking orders over the phone and giving it to them when the pick it up, I started this job last may and have been doing it since then. I am an extremely hard worker and have a very good work ethic, I am dedicated to everything I do while working and always give it my best. I am currently a junior with a major in Hospitality management. I think this degree is very suitable for me because I love to service people and make them happy, I am also very friendly and sociable so I think I could use these skills to my advantage while working within this industry whether it is when I open up a restaurant of my own, run a hotel with a spa and gym, or decide to go into the direction of event planning where I would like to be a manger of a catering business.

When I heard about this class I wasn’t really sure what I was going to get out of it or learn because I wasn’t too sure what it was to be honest. But since I am taking it I hope to get a lot out of it and learn valuable things attaining to the world. I myself am not positive with a computer and information system manager does, but I am looking forward to finding out. After reading the article I got a better understanding of it and think its pretty much common knowlege to know that this industry and growing so rapidly because technology is hugely relied on know a days.

This is a picture of both my sister and my step mother I would like to shareJ

I have no idea what I want to get out of this class yet because I really don't know what this class is about!

When I read this article a few things became apparent to me. I had no idea what a Computer and information system mangers do. I have no idea, but after I read this article I had a better understanding of what they did. What they do is that they direct the work of computer software engineers and computer programmers, computer system analysts and computer support specialists. In an excerpt from the website which is right here they give a better definition of what the jobs details are "They plan and coordinate activities such as installing and upgrading hardware and software, programming and systems design, the implementation of computer networks, and the development of Internet and intranet sites. They are increasingly involved with the upkeep, maintenance, and security of networks. They analyze the computer and information needs of their organizations from an operational and strategic perspective and determine immediate and long-range personnel and equipment requirements. They assign and review the work of their subordinates and stay abreast of the latest technology to ensure that the organization remains competitive." (Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010)
