The World is Flat

The most significant flatteners to me were that of Netscape, outsourcing, and open sourcing. First of all, Netscape was the first to make an internet browser which allowed people to access the internet at a much more productive rate. Also they were known to bring applications in synchronization, allowing for something like E-banking to not matter on what software or programs they use in comparison to yours which makes things so much easier. It completely flattened the field and made a huge difference in how interconnectivity was working. Another huge flattener was the dot com boom that made so much more information and programming allowed for everyone to use and to see. “While you were sleeping, a revolution happened.” Connectivity was just skyrocketing during this time. Netscape was such an important aspect of the start of this movement.

Now, after Netscape has done its part, outsourcing has made its way into the business world. With this, you can have your accounting department in India just as easy as it would be having it down the hall. This is simply because of the accidental 1 trillion dollar superfluous purchase of fiber optics and fiber optic cable allowing for communication of voice and data to transfer overseas virtually being free. This is how the power has shifted tremendously. This is how individuals and small groups will be able to take command.

Lastly, one of the most volatile flatteners of this movement is none other than open sourcing. This is a completely way to connect with other individuals, allowing you to be much more productive and it makes it like your next to one another. Have you ever heard of Firefox? It was made by a nineteen yr old from the Stanford and a 24 year old from Australia. This shows the potential of what is to come from “globalization”.

  1. I have to agree that Netscape is the most important flattener that Friedman introduced is one of the most important. The introduction of an internet browser changed the world as we know it. It allowed people to all of a sudden access information at the blink of an eye that was before inaccessible. Another component of this flattener was the laying of fiber optic cable globally. This may have been the most important part of this flattener because it made next door neighbors out of people that lived so far away. This also greatly stimulated the economy because it made it so easy for people thousands of miles away to do business easily and efficiently.
